In March, Guizhou is full of life. Nestled amidst the emerald mountains of Qiandongnan, the Zhaoxing Dong Village stands in serene stillness. This village, known as "the hamlet on the edge of time," is about to host a musical feast that transcends borders. From March 22 to 24, the cultural exchange event "Yale Whiffenpoofs A Cappella Choir Visits Liping, Guizhou" will take place here.

Whiffenpoofs合唱团此次访华不仅是其中国巡演40周年的纪念之旅，更是积极响应“5年邀请5万名美国青少年来华交流学习”倡议的行动。贵州站期间，Whiffenpoofs合唱团将与当地侗族大歌合唱团、村歌团、苗歌团等举行鼓楼对歌、文化交流专场演出、打卡“绿色音乐大厅”天生桥等精彩活动，深度体验侗家民风民俗，以音乐会友，以音乐对话，增进中美青年人文交往，推动多元文化的交流与融合。

the Whiffenpoofs' visit to China not only marks the 40th anniversary of their tour in the country but also serves as a concrete action in response to the initiative to "invite 50,000 young Americans to China for exchange and study over the next five years." During their stay in Guizhou, the Whiffenpoofs will engage in a series of vibrant activities with local troupes, including the Dong Grand Song Choir, the Village Song Group, and the Miao Song Group. These activities include antiphonal singing at the ancient Drum Tower, special cultural exchange performances, and a visit to the "Green Music Hall" at the Tiansheng Bridge. Through these experiences, they will immerse themselves in the folk customs of the Dong people, using music as a medium to foster friendship and dialogue. This cultural interaction aims to deepen people-to-people exchanges between Chinese and American youth and promote the integration of diverse cultures.

For over a century, this ensemble of senior Yale students, renowned for their exquisite vocal skills and unique musical style, has been dedicated to spreading understanding, respect, and peace through unaccompanied harmony across the globe. With performance tours spanning six continents and over 200 concerts annually, they have served as a vital bridge connecting different nations and cultures.

而侗族大歌，这种流传于贵州黔东南地区的无伴奏、无指挥、自然和声的多声部民歌，已有2500多年历史，2009年被联合国教科文组织列入人类非物质文化遗产代表作名录。它模仿蝉鸣、溪流、山谷回响，将自然之声化为天籁之音，传唱着侗族的历史与文化，被誉为“东方最古老的阿卡贝拉”、“一个民族的声音，一种人类的文化”。

In contrast, the Dong Grand Song, a polyphonic folk chorus passed down through generations in Southeast Guizhou, boasts a history of more than 2,500 years. Performed without instruments or a conductor, it relies on natural harmonies. In 2009, it was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Its melodies mimic the sounds of cicadas, flowing streams, and mountain echoes, transforming the voices of nature into heavenly music that perpetuates the history and culture of the Dong people. It is celebrated as the "oldest a cappella in the East" and "the voice of an ethnic group, the heritage of all humanity."
